Guidance

All magnet students will seek the College Preparatory Seal with Distinction (see 4-Year Plan for specific requirements). Additionally, students may pursue a dual seal diploma that combines a College Preparatory seal with a Career Technology seal. To achieve this seal, students must take 4 technology courses; the first is the Introduction to Technology, paired with 9th Literature.

Click here to see the Revised Graduation Rule effective 8/6/07

If students do not wish to seek a dual seal, then they must take at least 3 courses in either broad field technology (not clustered) or fine arts: band, orchestra, theater, chorus, visual arts (in addition to the Intro to Technology).

In other words, all magnet students will have a minor concentration in either technology or fine arts. The choice to cluster in technology is up to the student.

Students have formal advisements with Yvonne Young, Magnet Guidance Counselor, during the spring of their freshman year, in the fall of their junior year, and in the spring of their senior year. Because magnet students do not follow the same plan of study as the mainstream KMHS population, these sessions are more individualized. Typically they take place in a small-group format, 5 students and parents per session.

Other informal advisements are called for on an as-needed basis. The Magnet Coordinator also monitors all students' grades and meets with students regularly to evaluate success in the program.
